Services Provided

Linux Support Services

We can help with the installation and use of Linux on personal machines, including help with device drivers, and installation of toolkits required for your CS classes.

For Linux Help

1. Before you come in, it is important to find out as much information as possible about the hardware of your system. Check the manufacturer's website and your invoice for detailed hardware specifications and bring this list with you. The most important information would be your graphics card, your screen resolution, your network card, etc. Also, be sure to back up any vital information.
2. For service on your Linux system bring in your computer and be ready to recreate the problem you're having.
3. For a fresh installation, make sure to back up your files beforehand and set up your partitions.
4. Set some time aside. Installation of Linux takes a while, and figuring out driver problems can be a lengthy process. Although, many times if we've seen the problem before, we can have you up and running quickly.

Distribution of the Microsoft Academic Alliance Software.

Due to the terms of Microsoft's licensing, this is only available to students who are currently enrolled in at least one CS class. The list of software currently available is hosted both locally and on the ELMS website. The ELMS website is the method through which we can distribute license keys to individual students.

For Academic Alliance Software

1. Check your CS account email. If you don't know it, ask the CS System's Administrator. We cannot help you if you don't know your CS account name and password.
2. Go to the ELMS website and make sure you can log in. The login is your full CS email account (login@cs.wmich.edu) and the password was emailed to your CS account. If you didn't get the email, click on the link that says you forgot your password, and it will be emailed to you again.
3. After you log in, look at the list of software available, and add what you need to the cart. Check out when you're done and ELMS will give you the license keys you need for the software.
4. Bring blank CD-Rs to C-208 during our hours. We'll verify that you can log in and burn you copies of the software you've checked out.
