CS 555 - Computer Networks

HW2

Spring 2005

Given January 27, 2005

Due February 3, 2005 (11:00am)

This is your first OPNET assignment. It will basically introduce you to OPNET and make you familiar with using OPNET for network modeling and simulation. The CAE open lab has OPNET (ITGuru 10.0 etc.) software installed on the wintel workstations. You can also download IT Guru Academic Edition.

In this assignment extend the OPNET's office LAN tutorial as discussed in class on January 27, 2005, to assess the network performance of CEAS Parkview Campus Network.

Part A: Assume that each of the seven departments (CAE Center and the six academic departments CS, ECE, IME, MAE, PSE, and CCMD) has a star topology network. The baseline is CAE's network which has a server to serve a specific application to all the departments including CAE labs. This baseline network is expanded to include one department at a time until all the department networks are included. You will compare your baseline results (server load and ethernet delay) to each of the six scenerios (CAE+CS, CAE+CS+ECE, CAE+CS+ECE+IME, and so on). There are three applications - ftp (heavy), voice over IP Call (PCM quality), and Web Browsing (Heavy HTTP/1.1). Server loads are measured separately for each of the three applications.

Part B: Repeat part A by assuming that each of the seven department's subnet uses ring topology instead of the star topology and that the base subnet is connected via a router to each of the other six subnets.

Write a brief report on your observations including the assumptions you made. Be creative in your design. For extra credit, associate a different profile with each of the departments and then assess the network performance.

Any student may be asked to show and discuss his implementation in class, so be ready with your presentation.

Submit a zipped file of your source codes, scripts (to run your program) and report along with a hardcopy of your source codes, scripts, a couple of sample executions of your solution and report.

Use <hw#cs555_yourlastname_mmddyy.{zip,ppt}> as the naming convention for your zipped or ppt files when emailing your submission to ajay.gupta@wmich.edu. Replace '#' with the appropriate homework number.

REMINDER: You are responsible for making yourself aware of and understanding the policies and procedures in the undergraduate (pp. 268-270) [Graduate (pp. 24-26)] Catalog that pertain to Academic Integrity. Additionally, easy availability of information, material, source codes, lecture notes etc on the Internet may make it possible to find solutions to your assignments on the Internet or elsewhere. It is okay to refer to those, understand them and use them to enhance your solutions, generate your own ideas etc. However, you must give proper and full credit to original authors of the work, if you include their ideas. Failing to do so is part of academic and professional dishonesty. It will not be tolerated in this class. Do not give in to temptations...
